Her Story, Her Science: Celebrating Forgotten Women in Psychology
To be able to share our experiences and help others gives us so much energy and for that we are so grateful. Women supporting women is a huge part of what we are about at Indigo and the more we speak out the more the world listens.
“When we think of psychology’s pioneers, the names often lean towards the familiar, and often international. But this International Women’s Day, let’s shine a light on the incredible women, whose groundbreaking work has been too often overlooked.
Did you know?
Susan Isaacs (UK): Revolutionized early years education with her emphasis on the power of play. Her work has left a lasting legacy on how we understand child development in the UK.
Mary Sturt (UK): A dedicated early member of the British Psychological Society, facing the same hurdles as her peers, she pushed for the progression of women within the field.
Beatrice Edgell (UK): A professor who helped build the academic foundations of psychology in Britain. She was a key figure within the BPS.
Enid Balint (UK): With her husband Michael, she developed “Balint groups,” a method that fundamentally changed how doctors understand patient relationships, impacting medical training across the UK and beyond.
Claudia Hammond (UK): A modern voice bringing psychological research to the forefront of public understanding. Her work as a broadcaster and author has demystified psychology for countless people.
Mamie Phipps Clark (US): Her research on the psychological impact of segregation on children was pivotal in the Brown v. Board of Education ruling.
Anna Freud (Austria/UK): Beyond her father’s shadow, she revolutionized child psychoanalysis, focusing on ego psychology and defense mechanisms.
Karen Horney (Germany/US): She bravely challenged Freudian dogma, highlighting the impact of social and cultural factors on personality.
These women, both here in the UK and internationally, faced immense barriers, yet their contributions shaped the field of psychology as we know it. Their stories are a powerful reminder of the importance of recognizing and celebrating women’s achievements, past and present.
